Johnson, an England under-21 international, had an impressive season for the Eastland-club, making twenty-three league appearances and drawing plaudits for his midfield displays.
Such form did not go unnoticed by City’s rivals and the uncertainty surrounding manager Sven-Göran Eriksson could lead to Johnson’s exit as he, along with several other first-team players, seek the security other Premier League clubs can offer.
With Xabi Alonso looking increasingly set on a move to Italy and talks with Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry deadlocked, Liverpool could well swoop for Johnson within the next two weeks to see off the challenge from The Toffees.
David Moyes, however, is keen to bolster his midfielder after the departure of Lee Carsley and has the funds to match City’s estimated value of Johnson which stands at £10 million.
Eriksson’s future at City is set to be decided within the next ten days by the club’s owner Thaksin Shinawatra with reports suggesting that he has already been lined up as Mexico coach.
