We take a look at the career of Craig Bellamy, who today made an emotional return to Liverpool Football Club.

The Welsh international had previously fulfilled a boyhood dream when he left Blackburn Rovers for Merseyside for the first time back in 2006 - and despite just one season in L4, he played his part in some dramatic victories.

The diminutive striker hit nine goals in 42 games, including a header in a 2-1 Champions League success over Barcelona in February 2007. He scored one and set up another for John Arne Riise as the Reds beat the reigning European champions in their own backyard.

He netted a debut strike at the Kop end against Maccabi Haifa and was also on target against his former club Blackburn.

His pace and work-rate were to prove valuable assets during the campaign as Liverpool reached another Champions League final, although he was an unused substitute during the 2-1 loss to AC Milan.

Bellamy's only trophy with the Reds was the Community Shield when he set up the winner for Peter Crouch with a perfect left-wing cross in a 2-1 success over Chelsea in Cardiff.

However, with Rafa Benitez looking for a new direction Bellamy joined West Ham in August 2007.

A move to Manchester City then materialised in January 2009 when he proved a very effective weapon playing on the left side of the attack.

He scored two fantastic goals in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford and was a popular figure with the City faithful.

Despite his relationship with the fans he later fell out of favour with Roberto Mancini and spent a season on loan at Cardiff City - before eventually making his Liverpool return.

1) The Welshman has described his role in the 2-1 Champions League success over Barcelona back in 2007 as his best moment in football. "All I wanted to do was make the most of the special atmosphere and the build up to the game," he later recalled. "I've been reasonably lucky in football, playing for my country and other big clubs, but that was my best moment in the game."

2) Craig is already thinking about his career once he's hung up his boots - and has his mind set on management. The striker has undertaken a coaching course with the Welsh FA to earn his badges. He said: "I believe I have a lot to offer when I finish football as well. I always said I didn't want to become a manager, but I changed that view."

3) Bellamy will no doubt be delighted to be linking up with Steven Gerrard once more - the man he describes as the best player he has ever played with. "Even if the chips are down and you can't see yourself getting into the game, he can just do something out of nothing. Even if he is just going to pass the ball five yards, it is the best five yard pass you have ever seen."

4) His favourite website is Youtube because in his own words: "I can download all the best bits from all my favourite footballers."

5) Outside of football, Bellamy has set-up his own charity, the Craig Bellamy Foundation for disadvantaged children in Sierra Leone.

1. Coates is nicknamed 'Luganito' by Uruguay fans because he's seen as the natural successor to the captain of the national team, Diego Lugano. Indeed, Lugano has previously said himself that he expects Coates to go on to skipper the national team.

2. Coates's signing now means Liverpool have two Copa America winners in their squad - Luis Suarez, crowned player of the tournament, and Sebastian Coates, young player of the tournament.

3. Standing at a towering 6ft and 6 inches, Sebastian comes close to being the Reds' tallest ever player - dwarfed only by Peter Crouch.

4. Coates shares his birthday with another giant ex-Red, Sami Hyypia. The duo were both born on October 7, a date that is also special for Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon.

5. The 20-year-old has actually scored against a Liverpool side before - Liverpool Fútbol Club - who Coates faced whilst playing for Nacional.

6. In an interview with Ovacion, Coates revealed that it was talks with his fellow countryman Luis Suarez that helped persuade him to choose Liverpool. 7. The Uruguayan shouldn't have too much trouble learning English. Sebastian's father, Peter, is an Englishman himself and the player has admitted previously to taking a couple of lessons off him.

Coates the powerful centre-back, who stands at a towering 6ft 6in, is renowned for his commanding aerial displays - both defensively and offensively - as well as providing a solid presence at the back.

Coates joined the Nacional academy at 11 and went on to break into the first-team seven years later, making his senior debut against Bella Vista in 2009. Such was his impact, he was crowned man of the match by Spanish newspaper El Pais afterwards.

Following on from that the Uruguayan started every single game for Nacional, withstanding suspensions and national duty, notching 54 appearances and four goals.

Although Coates played just three months of the 2008-09 campaign for Nacional, his performances for the title-winning team led to the prestigious Uruguayan Championship 'Revelation of the Season' crown.

It was that summer Coates made his international bow, playing in the U20 World Cup where Uruguay went unbeaten in a group that also contained England and eventual winners Ghana. 2010-11 proved to be another glittering campaign for the defender as Nacional clinched another title,while on a personal level Coates scooped the Uruguayan Championship Player of the Season and Defender of the Season accolades.

It led to a first senior international cap just a week before the Copa America finals in a friendly against Estonia.

Injuries meant Coates was handed his chance to play in the tournament alongside compatriot Luis Suarez as Uruguay surged towards the trophy.

The youngster's composed displays belied his tender years and, as a result, earned the accolade of Young Player of the tournament.

The 20-year-old completed his transfer from Nacional after passing a medical and securing a work permit earlier today.

Director of Football Damien Comolli chats to Liverpoolfc.tv about the signing of Jose Enrique, why he believes the defender is one of the league's best and the possibility of any further comings or goings at Anfield this summer.

Damien, Jose Enrique is now a Liverpool player - how pleased are you?

I am very pleased because it was an area we felt we needed to strengthen - we were a bit weak and felt we had to do something. I am very pleased to have signed arguably one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

What sort of qualities will he bring to the team?

The first thing that comes to my mind is his pace. He is a very quick, strong and powerful athlete with good technique, as you would expect from someone who comes from Spain, and a good left foot. He will give us some size as well because he is about 6ft 1ins, which is a very good size for a full-back. So all of this and signing a player that is already in the Premier League means we know he will settle in very easily. He is good friends with Andy (Carroll) from their Newcastle days, so he ticks a lot of boxes.

How important is it that he has already played for four years in England?

It's very important. Very, very important. As I said, he knows Andy, he knows Pepe (Reina) from Spain as they used to play at the same club, Villarreal, although not at the same time. But most importantly, he knows the league and what to expect - and what to expect when you play for Liverpool Football Club. We know he is going to come in and hit the ground running.

Jose is only 25 years old - are you confident he will improve at Liverpool?

That's a discussion I've just had with him. I think one of the reasons he wanted to move here is because he thinks there is a lot more to come from him. We all think that - Kenny, myself and the coaches all think exactly the same thing. We think if he does well here, he could be a candidate for the Spanish national team as well. He is very eager for that and he is as eager as we are to play in Europe and compete for trophies.

Liverpool signed Jose Enrique

Jose Enrique admits signing for Liverpool is one of the 'happiest days' of his life - and has immediately set his sights on helping bring silverware back to Anfield.

The left-back has been given the number three as his squad number after it became available following Paul Konchesky's sale to Leicester.

The Spain full-back completed his transfer from Newcastle United on Friday to become the Reds' fifth major signing of a busy summer.

Enrique is already itching to don the red jersey for the first time and is aiming to play his part in helping Liverpool mount a strong challenge for the game's top honours.

He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "This is one of the happiest days of my life. I have come to one of the biggest clubs not just in England, but in the world. I am really, really happy.

"They have won a lot of things including the Champions League. They have amazing players and I hope to win things here.

"Of course I am looking forward to playing in front of the Kop. Everybody speaks about the fans here and they are amazing. I am looking forward to it. I hope it will be this weekend, but if not I can wait."

He added: "Damien Comolli told me it is an amazing club. In Spain there is a saying, 'When the train comes in, you have to take it.' This is the first time a big club has come in for me and I had to take it (the opportunity). I am really happy."

Enrique joins Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Alexander Doni and Stewart Downing in moving to Anfield this summer.

The 25-year-old admits he's excited by Liverpool's transfer business and believes they can help him quench his thirst for trophies.

He said: "I am excited by the new signings - it shows Liverpool's ambition.

"They spent a lot of money in January on Andy (Carroll) and Luis Suarez, and this summer they've spent a lot of money on other players.

"You can see they have big ambitions and that's why I came here - because I want to win things and I think I can do that here."

Enrique joins Liverpool a little more than 24 hours ahead of their Barclays Premier League season opener against Sunderland.

However, with a full pre-season under his belt at Newcastle, the defender is ready to be called upon whenever Kenny Dalglish sees fit.

"If the manager needs me, I am ready to play," said Enrique. "I have already played for Newcastle in pre-season, not every game but two or three games and I am fit and if the manager needs me, I am ready to play.

"My ambition is win everything with Liverpool. This year we won't play in the Champions League, so the most important thing is to try and win the league.

Stewart Downing was born in Middlesbrough on July 22, 1984.

He joined Middlesbrough as a schoolboy and made his first-team debut for the club on April 24, 2002 in a Premier League match at Ipswich Town.

After nine appearances for 'Boro, Downing was sent out on loan to fellow North-East club Sunderland in 2003, where he scored an impressive three goals in seven appearances. When he returned to Middlesbrough, he broke into the first team, going on to make a total of 206 appearances (scoring 22 goals) before leaving to join Aston Villa in the summer of 2009.

His Villa career spanned two years, during which time he tallied 75 appearances and scored eight goals.

Downing notched a total of nine Premier League assists for Aston Villa last season, more than any Liverpool player. He was joint ninth in the assists tally with Charlie Adam, Joey Barton, Peter Crouch, Peter Odemwingie, David Silva and Rafael Van der Vaart.

His last appearance for the club was against Liverpool on the final day of 2010-11, a game in which he scored the only goal to help Villa to a 1-0 win.

The 26-year-old made his England debut on March 9, 2005 in a friendly v Holland at Villa Park, coming on as a second-half substitute for Shaun Wright-Phillips. He currently has 27 caps for England.

Downing has been involved in several charitable and community projects outside his playing career. He supports the nationwide 'No Messin' campaign along with freestyler Colin Nell and boxer Amir Khan, warning youngsters against playing on the railway lines. Liverpool complete Doni deal

Liverpool today confirmed they have completed the signing of Alexander Doni from AS Roma.

The goalkeeper has put pen to paper on a contract with the Reds after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

Doni, who has 10 caps for his country, made 179 appearances for Roma in six seasons in Italy during which time he lifted the Coppa Italia twice as well as the Supercoppa Italiana.

The 31-year-old custodian also helped Brazil to success in the 2007 Copa America.

1. Adam comes from a family of footballers. His father was a professional with Dundee United among other clubs while younger brother Grant is a goalkeeper at Glasgow Rangers.

2. The Dundonian began his career at Rangers and made his first-team bow in the 2003-04 campaign before a loan spell at Ross County, where he hit the headlines by scoring from inside his own half against St Mirren.

3. The Saints were so impressed they took him on loan themselves. Adam then returned to Ibrox in the summer of 2006 and was handed his opportunity to shine by gaffer Paul Le Guen. He admits to changing his diet on the advice of the Frenchman. "I'd never really thought of eating salads before," he said during an interview in 2010.

Dalglish signs three-year deal

Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool FC today confirmed that Kenny Dalglish has been appointed as Team Manager.

Dalglish, who was initially given the job until the end of the current campaign, has signed a three year deal with the Reds. It was also announced that First Team Coach Steve Clarke has put pen to paper on a three year contract.

Principal Owner John Henry said: "Kenny is a legendary Liverpool figure both as a supremely gifted footballer and successful manager. Since returning in January he has shown extraordinary leadership and the ability to bring the best out of so many people associated with the Club. It was obvious to us very early on that the atmosphere surrounding the Club had been transformed by his presence. No one else could have produced such a response. Therefore, I'm delighted we have agreed to a new contract. We didn't need nor want to look elsewhere for the right man to manage the team.

"Working closely with him, we've seen first-hand his love for the Club and his determination to do whatever is necessary to produce a winning side again. He has a unique relationship with our supporters and embodies everything that is special about the Liverpool way of doing things. Liverpool enjoys a global standing within the sport, but having Kenny in the dug-out will help us in our efforts to bring the best available talent to the Club as we continue to move the club forward.

Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool FC confirmed today that Ian Ayre had been appointed as the Club's new Managing Director and Damien Comolli has been promoted to Director of Football.

Ayre has been the Liverpool FC Commercial Director since July 2007 and Comolli has been with the Club since November 2010 as Director of Football Strategy.

Principal Owner John Henry said: "Ian has enormous experience gained from his work in the sports and media businesses over the past 15 years and we are delighted today to announce this significant appointment. We conducted an extensive recruitment search and met with outstanding candidates who sought this role but in the end, after having worked with Ian and other top executives within the club, we realised that Ian had all of the attributes necessary to lead the Club forward. Ian has been doing an outstanding job driving commercial revenues and has a proven track record in successfully leading and developing businesses in a number of different regions and sectors of importance to Liverpool FC. Executives from Liverpool FC and Everton FC announced this morning that their new shared 85,000 seat "Super" stadium is to be called Scousefield Park.

Clubs legends Phil Neal and Tommy Smith today welcomed the return to the dugout of Kenny Dalglish.

The King has assumed managerial control until the end of the season following the departure of Roy Hodgson.
Neal, who played alongside Dalglish in three European Cup triumphs, said: "Results have been up and down into the New Year, starting with Newcastle.
"We should have propelled ourselves up the table and we didn't do that. And with the fixtures coming thick and fast in the New Year now, we have got to be a unit.
"Kenny would be the first man to stand in and maybe create a bit of the old type of togetherness really, along with the fans.
"Maybe we'll have a better New Year."
Neal added: "We are not looking to the past with this appointment.
"Can Kenny prove himself once more? He's a quality person and a quality former player. He knows all about togetherness.
"If Kenny picks us up and charges us up to where we want to be - challenging - then good luck to him.
"He's still got the spirit within him and he's got the experience. He knows what the club was built on all those years ago."
Former defender Tommy Smith also also welcomed the return of Dalglish.

Liverpool Football Club have confirmed the appointment of Kenny Dalglish as the club's manager until the end of the season.

The Kop legend returns to the Anfield helm in a temporary capacity following the departure of Roy Hodgson.
Dalglish is revered on the Kop having represented the club as both a player and manager with great distinction.
With a delicate touch and the ultimate football brain, King Kenny is regarded by the majority of Liverpudlians as the club's greatest ever player.
When he joined in August 1977, it was hard to see how Bob Paisley's side could top their first European Cup triumph of the previous season. But, with the highly influential Dalglish in the team, the next 13 years brought untold riches.
Unlike many Liverpool signings of the era, the Scotland international was already a household name when he made the switch from Parkhead to Anfield. His deeds in the green and white hoops of Celtic had made him one of the most sought-after figures in British football and it required a record £440,000 fee to secure his services.
Dalglish was brought in to replace Kop idol Kevin Keegan, who'd moved to Hamburg earlier that summer, though any fears he couldn't fill those illustrious boots were quickly laid to rest.
The Glasgow-born forward found the net seven minutes into his league debut against Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park, and followed that with a goal on his first appearance in front of the Kop as Newcastle were beaten 2-0.
Dalglish slipped seamlessly into Paisley's all-conquering red machine and the new King of the Kop crowned his first season by topping the club's goalscoring charts. The most memorable of his 31 strikes came in the 1978 European Cup final against FC Bruges at Wembley, a delicate dink over the 'keeper that clinched a 1-0 victory.
The move south increased his profile dramatically, though Dalglish was never one to seek the limelight and remained typically modest despite his new found superstar status.

In 1979, his talent was recognised by the football writers of England, who voted the canny Scotsman their Footballer of the Year. The award was just desserts for a player whose every touch made Kopites purr with delight.
A selfless team player who brought others into play, Dalglish was an on-the-field visionary who could spot openings that few, if any, of his contemporaries could see.
David Johnson was the first grateful recipient of this in the late Seventies but it was the King's strike partnership with Ian Rush that was to fire the Reds to greater glory during the Eighties.
The club may have had a new chief goalscorer, but Dalglish remained the man pulling all the strings. If assists were recorded back then, he'd have been the first name on everyone's Fantasy Football teamsheet.
A double Footballer of the Year in 1983, he was without doubt the finest British-born player of his generation and was rightly spoken about in the same breath as Maradona, Zico, Platini and Rummenigge.
With the ball at his feet, he was a pure genius - a contention backed up by footage of just about every one of his 172 Liverpool goals. There's the aforementioned European Cup winner, his sublime curlers at Highbury, Portman Road and Goodison, a mazy dribble through the Man United defence at Maine Road, his stretching volley in the League Cup final versus West Ham and title clinchers against Tottenham and Chelsea.
Everyone has their own particular favourite but the one common denominator in all the above was the famous Kenny celebration: a quick turn with arms aloft and a beaming smile that would have lit up even the murkiest Mersey sky.
The Kop hero-worshipped him like no other. Dalglish was the first name they sang and many a bed sheet was converted into a homemade banner paying homage.
In the aftermath of the Heysel Stadium disaster, the playmaker was a surprising but popular appointment as player/manager.
Fears his new role would result in more time on the touchline and less on the pitch were initially unfounded. It was on his return to the side during the 1985-86 run-in that Liverpool embarked on a winning streak that would see them clinch a coveted league and FA Cup double. How fitting it was at Stamford Bridge when Dalglish 'the player' scored the goal that secured the title.
Inevitably, his appearances became fewer and fewer over the next couple of years but there was still the odd flash of brilliance as the master sought to teach his apprentices.
What Dalglish went on to achieve as Liverpool manager cemented his legendary status.
His double in 1986 was followed by league titles in 1988 and 1990, with another all-Merseyside Cup triumph in 1989.
Who knows how many European trophies would have found their way back to Anfield during this period had English clubs not been barred from continental competition.
It could be argued that it took a decade for the club to fully recover from his shock resignation in February 1991, but more than 18 years later, The King was emotionally reunited with the Reds when he accepted a role at the Academy in 2009.
As well as aiding the development of Liverpool's stars of the future, Dalglish also worked in an ambassadorial role helping develop the commercial side of the business around the globe.
A year later, the 59-year-old was back in the Anfield hot seat almost two decades after his resignation, assuming an interim position as Reds boss.

Principal Owner John Henry commented: "We are grateful for Roy's efforts over the past six months, but both parties thought it in the best interests of the club that he stand down from his position as team manager. We wish him all the best for the future."

I have, however, found the last few months some of the most challenging of my career. I am very sad not to have been able to put my stamp on the squad, to be given the time to bring new players into the club in this transfer window and to have been able to be part of the rebuilding process at Liverpool. The club has some great, world-class players, with whom it has been a pleasure to work and I wish the entire squad well for the rest of the season. Rennes midfielder Sylvain Marveaux was a VIP guest at this evening's 1-0 home defeat to Wolves.

The 24-year-old can play anywhere across midfield but is often used on the left in an attacking role.

"There are a couple of pre-contract agreements that could be signed around 1st January or the summer."

The latest whispers suggest that Marveaux is on Merseyside to ink a contract offer but there is no official confirmation at this time.

Liverpool meeting imminent to discuss Hodgson severance

Article from koptalk.co.uk said that " Liverpool Football Club's senior executives will sit down over the weekend to discuss Roy Hodgson's severance".

The club's owners have been in the hunt for a new manager ever since taking over so pay little attention to the media who claim that their assignment started following the Wolves game.

But they must now decide whether or not to axe the manager now and see out the season without a permanent replacement until the summer.

If Hodgson was to resign he would lose his right to compensation. If he's fired then the club will have to pay his contract up.

Christian Purslow, one of those responsible for appointing Hodgson, has now conceded to the owners that his appointment was the wrong one.

A source said: "Christian has put his hands up and admitted that he made an error.

"He has still defended the appointment by saying that he saw the role as a short term one until the club was sold and that he expected the owners to appoint their own man.

"He will tell you that there were no viable candidates available at the time to replace Benitez.

Damien Comolli (born 1972) is the Director of Football Strategy with Liverpool. He is French and has previously worked as a football coach and scout, with AS Monaco, AS Saint-Étienne, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. He speaks fluent English, Spanish and French.

He was born in Béziers, France, and played as a youth team player at AS Monaco. In 1992, he began a successful three-year coaching job with Monaco, where he looked after the club's Under-16 squads and won the state championship at that level. Comolli completed a law degree in 1995 and gained his French coaching licence.

In 1996 he joined Arsenal and spent seven seasons as a European scout and is credited with the discovery of several of Arsenal's players such as Kolo Touré, Emmanuel Eboué and Gaël Clichy. Between 2004 and 2005 he was technical director of AS Saint-Étienne.The club went through a successful period, finishing sixth in the league and reaching the semi-finals of the Coupe de France. During his time there he also oversaw a number of important first team signings and developed partnerships with junior and amateur clubs, locally, nationally and internationally.

In 2005 he became director of football at Tottenham Hotspur, with overall responsibility for the medical, academy, scouting and club secretarial departments, replacing the outgoing Frank Arnesen. During his time there he had several disagreements with coach Martin Jol, who after his departure from Spurs complained several players had been signed by Comolli without his agreement.He spent three years in the job but with Tottenham performing poorly in 2008-09 and some of Comolli's signings coming in for criticism,he was dismissed in October 2008, along with manager Juande Ramos, assistant Gus Poyet and first team coach Marcos Álvarez‎. During his time at Tottenham, Comolli was responsible for Tottenham's policy of signing some of the world's brightest young talents, bringing young players such as Gareth Bale, Alan Hutton, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Giovanni dos Santos, Adel Taarabt and Younes Kaboul to the club.

On 9th November 2008, it was announced that he would return to Saint-Étienne as sporting director.His appointment led to the departure of manager Laurent Roussey.

On 3rd November 2010 his appointment as Director of Football Strategy at Liverpool FC was announced, with part of his remit being to oversee the recruitment of new players to the club.

Roy Hodgson today welcomed the appointment of Damien Comolli as Liverpool's new Director of Football Strategy.

The Reds confirmed Comolli as the latest addition to the club's backroom staff on Thursday afternoon.

Comolli was born in Beziers, France and played as a youth team player at AS Monaco. He was previously European scout at Arsenal FC, Director of Football at Tottenham Hotspur FC and most recently Sporting Director at AS Saint-Etienne. Damien holds a French coaching license and is fluent in English, Spanish and French.

Hodgson told an Anfield press conference: "I feel very good about it.

"It is something we have talked about with the owners and something they were very keen to put in place. The owners come from an American sporting background where is the team manager is very much responsible for team affairs, but alongside him there is a person who can have all sorts of titles, a type of sporting director in European terms.

"It's someone who obviously has a large input into the running of the football club and has an input and a part to play in a management structure.

"If you're going to run a football club these days there are a lot of elements that need to be dealt with. Recruitment of players and scouting is a major, major aspect in this respect, as of course is the Academy and all the work you need to do to bring players through.

"All of this of this has a life of its own to some extent outside the life of a first-team squad.

"In Europe I am very used to having a situation where you have to work alongside people like that and I think it is becoming more and more common in England as well, so that's something the new owners wanted to introduce to the club and I welcome it very much.

"I think it is going to be a great advantage to us to have a man of Damien's qualities, knowledge and experience and I think we can only profit from it as a club. I am looking forward to working with him."

Journalists quizzed the boss on if he felt the appointment of Comolli was a sign of a cultural shift at Liverpool and also asked for his thoughts on the role Anfield's new man will play.

Hodgson replied: "When I worked at Fulham I worked very closely with Alistair Mackintosh. He didn't have the title 'sporting director' but my dealings with him and the way we worked together, I would have called him sporting director.

"He had other responsibilities as well with regard to Mohammed Al-Fayed, but as far as I was concerned he was my sporting director and I am very used to working in that way.

"I think more and more clubs are. If you're managing a Barclays Premier League team, organising training, coaching, dealing with the press and organising and preparing for all the games, that is a large body of work. On top of that if you're also organising all the scouting, looking after the academy and reserve team and all the other numerous administrative things that are required to run a football club at this level, you are asking an awful lot of people.

"The days of the 'dictator type' English manager have long since passed anyway, where everything went through one man and no-one dared even buy a paper clip without that person's approval.

"It is just a question of strategy which I think makes a lot of sense for all football clubs and certainly makes a lot of sense for our football club at this moment in time because we're in a transition.

"We've got new owners who have a very clear vision and philosophy for the club and they want a management structure in place they can identify with. The means one they can identify with from American and European sporting models, not necessarily an archetypical, if somewhat outdated, English model."

John Henry today addressed the world's media alongside Chairman Martin Broughton, Managing Director Christian Purslow and Commercial Director Ian Ayre as news broke that New England Sports Ventures had completed the purchase of Liverpool Football Club.

In what were frenzied scenes inside the lobby of the offices of the law firm Slaughter and May, fans joined the press in trying to get the first word on a story that has never been out of the news headlines all week.

Here's a full transcript of what was said in front of the media scrum:

Martin Broughton: "As every Liverpool fan knows, the most nerve-wracking way to win a match is in a penalty shoot-out but in the end, as long as you get the right result, it is worth the wait. And we have got the right result. John, well done."

John Henry: "I am proud and humble. We've got a lot of work to do and I can't tell you how happy I am that we have finally, finally got to this point."

Journalist: What can you tell us about the deal Mr Henry? How much is the deal worth and what are you hoping to achieve as Liverpool owner?

JH: "I have actually no idea what the deal is worth. It depends on what day it is."

Journalist: What's your message for the fans?

JH: "We're not going to have a lot to say, our actions will hopefully speak for us. We are going to do a lot of listening and we have a lot to learn. Our actions will hopefully speak for us."

JH: "It's too early to say what we're going to do but we're here to win, we have a tradition of winning - we (the Boston Red Sox) are the second-highest spending club in Major League Baseball and we're here to win, we will do whatever is necessary."

Journalist: Mr Henry, what do you think of the legal challenge made by Tom Hicks and George Gillett? They are claiming damages of one billion dollars?

JH: "Well, why is it only that much?"

Journalist: Will you build a new stadium for Liverpool?

JH: "It's too early to say what's going to happen on the stadium front."

Journalist: Will you be at Sunday's Merseyside derby?

JH: "I think it's better for our first experience with the supporters to be at home."

Journalist: Martin, what's this period been like for you?

MB: "It's been pretty stressful but we've been confident all the way through that we would get there. We knew we were doing the right thing, would get justice and I think we got that in the end."

Journalist: Mr Broughton, what happens to you personally now, as Chairman and Christian Purslow as Managing Director?

MB: "For the time being I'll be staying on in a transitional role as John works out how he wants to run the club."

Journalist: Can you guarantee this is not a leverage buyer?

JH: "I can guarantee that."

Following NESV's purchase of Liverpool Football Club, we spoke to Tim Treacy of the Boston LFC Supporters' Club to get the lowdown on our new owners.

Tim, what is your reaction to today's news?

It's great news. All of the supporters I spoke to this morning in Boston have just been ecstatic. It's great news for Liverpool.

I guess NESV are heroes in Boston for what they have done at the Red Sox?

They do. The Red Sox were in a much worse situation than Liverpool (when John Henry took over), not in terms of debt but definitely in terms of winning anything. They hadn't won anything for over eighty years, then John Henry came along and two years later they landed their first title in eighty-six years.

He really listened to the fans, he had meetings with them and they told him they didn't want a new stadium so he redeveloped Fenway Park. He made the Red Sox into a worldwide brand and into arguably the second most popular sports team of any in the world.

What sort of a character is John Henry?

He's very reserved - a very quiet man. He's softly spoken and an all-round good guy. Since he came over to Boston and took over the Red Sox, in terms of charity alone he's spent about $40million. He gets involved in the community and he likes to make decisions with everyone involved, so I guess when it comes to making decisions for Liverpool Football Club he'll talk to players, he'll talk to management and he'll talk to fans.

Overall I think we've got a really good owner here and I'm very excited for the prospects of Liverpool Football Club.

Today's news came as a lift to all the fans here, is that the case for the many supporters of our club in America?

I would say yes. It's been a tough year and a half for us; a lot of our supporters were very concerned. It's come full circle for us now and our websites have exploded with well wishes. It's been a great time for us and hopefully it will be a great future for Liverpool.

New England Sports Ventures (NESV) today announces that it has completed the purchase of Liverpool Football Club.

NESV wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to the Board of Liverpool FC for their diligence and their efforts on behalf of the Club and its supporters.

The transaction values the Club at £300m and eliminates all of the acquisition debt placed on LFC by its previous owners, reducing the Club's debt servicing obligations from £25m-£30m a year to £2m-£3m.

New England Sports Ventures is committed to winning and currently owns a portfolio of companies, including the Boston Red Sox, New England Sports Network, Fenway Sports Group and Roush Fenway Racing.

Liverpool Football Club today announces that the Board has agreed the sale of the Club to New England Sports Ventures (NESV).

New England Sports Ventures currently owns a portfolio of companies including the Boston Red Sox, New England Sports Network, Fenway Sports Group and Rousch Fenway Racing.

iverpool must cough up big to sign PSV Eindhoven striker Ola Toivonen.

The Daily Mail says PSV Eindhoven's Sweden striker Toivonen will cost Liverpool at least £8million after being watched by them three times in the space of a week.

Hodgson sent his assistant Sammy Lee to PSV's 3-1 win at Heerenveen a week last Saturday before making a personal check on the 24-year old in Sweden's midweek 3-0 win over Scotland in Stockholm.

Having scored twice against Heerenveen and once on international duty, Toivonen turned on an even more impressive show for Liverpool scouts with a hat-trick in PSV's 6-0 rout of De Graafschap at the Philips Stadium on Saturday night.

Aware of Liverpool's interest in a player who has three years left on contract and is equally effective up front or as an attacking midfielder, PSV have indicated a willingness to sell but want more than the £5million Hodgson is ready to offer as an opening bid.

A Profile of Kenny Huang: Liverpool’s Potential New Owner

Kenneth Huang, or Huang Jianhua to go by his Chinese name, has been linked with a consortium who are apparently attempting to buy Liverpool Football Club, but who exactly is he? Huang had the unique honour of becoming China’s first graduate to work in the New York Stock Exchange in the 1980s, and has developed an interest in Western culture during his time in the United States. After graduating in 1984 with a BA degree from Zhongshan University in Guangzhou, his hometown, he moved to study in the US at Columbia University before moving to New York to complete his Masters degree at St Johns. It was when he was at New York University though, while completing some MBA financial management courses, that he began to work at the Stock Exchange.

From here on, Huang became an exceptionally accomplished business executive, building relationships in his native China and using his connections to great effect. He set up many international investments and financing projects between Chinese and American companies, partnering with many of China’s large state-owned enterprises in the deals, and making large profits by benefiting from the economic boom in China. One of his crucial partners in America was with one Les Alexander, and this is where Huang’s connections in sport become very interesting. Alexander is the owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets and back in 2002, Huang worked with Alexander to bring Chinese Basketball superstar Yao Ming to the NBA to play for Alexander’s team.

Huang’s involvement in US Sport doesn’t end there though. He seems to have enthusiasm for many American sports including basketball and baseball. He uses his company SportsPro Media China to link Chinese sponsors and US Sports giants, including baseball team New York Yankees where he owns a percentage of the franchise with American businessman Marc Ganis. He has also brought much needed multi-year sponsorship deals for basketball teams Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers in recent years, as well helping to boost the NBA’s profile in China through pre-season tours. Early this year, Huang bought a 15% stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers leading to speculation in the US that Yao Ming would move from the Houston Rockets to join NBA all-star Lebron James at Cleveland. James has subsequently left to join the Miami Heat.

As well as being involved with sport in America, Huang has started to promote basketball in his native China, buying Jilin Northeast Tigers and purchasing a Basketball league in his home country (the National Basketball League) to rival the present Chinese Basketball Association. On top of this, he announced last year a youth Baseball league in the country, showing that his enthusiasm for sport is wide ranging. Huang it seems is determined to make both sports as popular as possible in China.

Huang continues to excel in business too and recently set up a new business venture called Rocket Capital with Les Alexander and San Antonio Spurs former owner Billy Joe “Red” McCombs. Together (with Alexander & McCombs billions and Huang’s connections with China’s state industries) they have begun to collect an assortment of companies, investing in one of China’s largest automakers Brilliance Auto, as well as in the China Railway Group, China Sinoma International Engineering, Uni President Enterprises Corp, Xinjiang XinXin Mining Industry, and Anta Sports Products, the last of which now sponsor’s Alexander’s Houston Rockets. Rocket Capital also has invested large amounts into Hong Kong’s private equity market, to the amount of $200 million in 2007 alone.

The two things you need to know about Huang then, are that although he is wealthy, it is his backers that really hold the billions. The second fact is that not only will he bring wealthy backers, his connections with China’s state owned companies mean exceptionally lucrative sponsorship deals from the Far East. If Huang’s consortium does takeover, expect many pre-season tours of China, but also keep in mind that Liverpool maybe the first football club to crack the highly lucrative market in China. Huang already has a track record of doing this, tying Anta to Houston Rockets and more recently Tsing Tsao to the Cleveland Cavaliers. His passion for sport is undoubted with his deal-brokering in both Basketball and Baseball, and he now looks like turning his attention to football and Liverpool FC.

Liverpool takeover 'stepped up' as Kenny Huang enters talks with RBS

CHINESE sports mogul Kenny Huang could be the new owner of Liverpool FC by the end of this month.

His bid values the club at around £325m – way below the level sought by co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett – and would leave the club debt-free.

Mr Huang is understood to want to take control as soon as possible, and is ambitiously targeting being in charge in time to give new manager Roy Hodgson funds to use before the transfer window closes on August 31.

Sources close to the club last night described his approach as “very serious”, but stressed that any deal would not be driven by footballing timetables. More pressing from the Liverpool FC side is its large loan from its bankers Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS).

The club has a £297m credit facility that is dependent on short-term extensions, and RBS has repeatedly said that only new investment or a change of ownership would see this renegotiated. British Airways chairman Martin Broughton was brought in as an independent chairman in April to oversee the sale of the club, with RBS setting a six-month deadline.

Last night, Mr Broughton said: “It still remains the objective to conclude a deal before the end of the transfer window.”

Roy Hodgson is ready to make highly-rated Belgium star Steven Defour a replacement for Javier Mascherano.

The new Liverpool manager was due to watch the Standard Liege midfielder in action last night, as the Belgian League got underway.

And even though a late return from Macedonia following the Reds' Europa League tie with Rabotnicki scuppered those plans, Hodgson still had the much-fancied player watched.

Defour became one of the hottest properties in Europe a year ago, with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Everton, Juventus and Real Madrid all monitoring his progress.

But a serious foot injury ruled him out for much of the previous campaign, prompting United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to write to him to offer a personal good luck message.

Now he is back in action, and Hodgson is prepared to bid up to £12million to steal a march on his rivals and bring the 22-year-old to Anfield to fill the void that will be left by Mascherano's departure.

The Argentina skipper has been in talks with Inter Milan and has told the club he wants to go.

Hodgson bluntly spelt out to the midfielder that he will leave on Liverpool's terms, which means the Merseyside club lining up a replacement first.

And he sees Defour as filling that role, as a dynamic box-to-box player who can give the Reds a more attacking air.

Hodgson has scoured Europe for a suitable replacement for Mascherano, and has made enquiries with Juventus about Christian Poulsen, with the Italian club's director Giuseppe Marotta yesterday revealing an approach.

Fabio Aurelio has revealed his delight at re-signing for Liverpool and admitted: 'It's like a new beginning for me.

The Brazilian has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Reds having impressed manager Roy Hodgson and his staff at Melwood over the summer.

Aurelio told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I feel very pleased and proud. It feels like I am signing for the first time - everything has changed so it is like a new beginning for me with new confidence and a new boss.

"Hopefully I can do well this season."

He added: "My aim is to help the team do better than last season. Everything is going really well, so I think we can progress a lot.

"We have made some good additions to the team and we can be very confident."

Aurelio is part of the Liverpool squad that has travelled to Germany for Sunday's pre-season friendly with Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The defender is hopeful of playing some part at Borussia Park having worked hard to keep himself in good condition since the end of last season.

"I have been working for a while by myself since the end of my contract and trying to keep fit in pre-season, so I think I am in good condition," he said.

"Hopefully I can have some involvement in the game against Moenchengladbach."

Liverpool re-sign Aurelio

Liverpool have confirmed they have re-signed Fabio Aurelio after the defender put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the club.

The Brazilian appeared to have brought his Reds career to an end after leaving Anfield following the expiry of his contract in May.

However, Aurelio was offered the chance to earn a new deal with the club by boss Roy Hodgson and, after impressing both the technical staff and medical team at Melwood, has agreed a contract until 2012.

Hodgson told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I asked the club to find out whether Fabio had found a new club.

"When we ascertained that he hadn't, we invited him back to Melwood so both myself and my staff, and the medical team could properly assess the player.

"We were both very impressed and I am delighted we were able to re-sign Fabio."

Aurelio was included in the Liverpool travelling party that set off for Sunday's friendly with Borussia Moenchengladbach earlier today.

Aurelio left Anfield earlier this summer after failing to agree a new contract on a pay-as-you- play deal.

Aurelio made 71 Premier League appearances for Liverpool during his four seasons at the club, but his progress was hampered by injuries, restricting him to just eight league starts last term.

The Brazilian departed on a free transfer and was linked with a move back to his native Brazil, but he has yet to find a club.

Liverpool have failed to bring in a replacement for Aurelio despite being linked with a host of names, including Maynor Figueroa and Paul Konchesky.

However, it appears Aurelio could be in line for a sensational return to Anfield as Roy Hodgsonis ready to offer him a deal to solve his problems at left-back.

Hodgson is believed to be an admirer of the South American and Aurelio has linked up with the rest of the Liverpool squad in Germany for their pre-season friendly with Borussia Monchengladbach .

Liverpool Want Reto Ziegler to Replace Departed Insua?

The newly appointed Reds boss Roy Hodgson, who is now in Switzerland with the team as they prepare for their pre-season match against Swiss Club, Grasshoppers, has already stated his desire to fill up the vacant left back position at the club and the Swiss International has become the prime candidate to fill the post.

The former Spurs “Young Player of the year” had a pretty impressive outing for the Spurs during his brief spell at the Premier League. Although his form slightly wavered during his loan spells at Hamburger SV and Wigan Atletic, it was only the acquisition of Gareth Bale that made him seriously consider his future elsewhere, and he made his loan move to Sampdoria permanent.

The Swiss 24-year-old had a pretty decent display in the recently concluded World Cup for his country and is only reported to have rebuffed a move to the Italian Giants Juventus before the World Cup because he wanted more time on the pitch.

After his impressive spell with the White Lillies, Ziegler should really consider his move to Liverpool FC a step-up in his career. With only youngsters like Mavinga and Palsson left as formal replacements to Insua, Ziegler should really not be worried about the playing time on offer with the Reds.

With the Europa fast approaching, Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is highly dependent on his young guns to do the job for him as he plans to rest the World Cup stars. However, considering the opponents from either Macedonia or Armenia, a victory should not be seriously threatened.

With Jovanovic and Kyrgiakos still travelling with the team, it would still not be surprising if both of them indeed do appear in the Europa match (in spite of the foresaid declaration of not playing World Cup Stars) due to lack of experience of the squad.

Just like Jovanovic and Kyrgiakos, Ziegler also had to return home after his spell of league matches in the tournament and thus signing him now could also result in Hodgson unleashing him as well in their Europa League opener.

Although the press still reports Maynor Figueroa and Paul Konchesky as Liverpool targets, Reto Zeigler is certainly looking good to leap frog them in the race. Liverpool FC will, however, still manage to sell the likes of Riera and a few others very soon if they are to finance the reported 6m GBP for the deal.
